Banshees Bar presents Folk'N'Shanty Night

Join us for a night of shanties and world folk with The Salty Sirens and Sue Ferrers.

Sue’s musical journey is woven together by a deep passion for the rare and enchanting Nyckelharpa, an instrument she has played since 2010. Originally trained in violin and jazz at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, she later completed a Graduate Diploma of Education at the University of New England in 1999, receiving the highest grade in Music teaching. Her commitment to music education also led to a published article in the *Journal for the Talented and Gifted* in Australia.

Between 1997 and 2004, Sue toured Europe extensively as violinist and backing vocalist with Popproperly, performing hundreds of concerts ranging from intimate unplugged venues to major open-air festivals across Holland, Belgium, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Germany. Living in Germany from 2000 to 2021, she taught strings at several music schools while building a career as a freelance violinist and nyckelharpist alongside artists including Sonja Kraushofer, Persephone and Goethes Erben.

Her nyckelharpa albums — *in the light of the moon*, *Embroidered Threads* and *only in the darkness can you see the stars* — highlight the instrument’s haunting beauty. In 2013, she was selected for the European Union’s ENCORE project, joining 21 nyckelharpa players from across Europe for performances in Italy broadcast on Deutschlandfunk. Since returning to Australia in 2021, Sue has continued inspiring audiences and students alike, teaching strings on the Gold Coast while earning finalist nominations in the Australian Folk Music Awards, Gold Coast Music Awards and Queensland Music Awards for her world music composition “Vitterpolskan.” She is the only performer solely on nyckelharpa in Australia.

Tonight she will be joined by Evan Clarry on guitar, Nicole Tate on harp, Benja King on double bass and Dave Kemp on percussion.

Lovers of swell sea shanties and rollicking singalongs, The Salty Sirens are Kristy "Capstan"field (vocals and accordion) and Elyse "Fish"patrick (vocals and whale facts). Since 2021, they have been rocking boats the country wide with their flavour of sea shanties, SHE shanties and sea songs with a modern, queer twist, and now these sapphic sailors are sailing into Ipswich to lead you on a musical journey through traditional and modern nautical folk song, tales of shipwork, daring adventure, defiance and debauchery on the high seas.
Hoist the anchor and limber up those sealegs - these really aren't your grandpa's sea shanties!
